Your teeth are meant to cut and chew foods, but there are some foods and drinks that even they have a hard time standing up against. This is true for coffee, which may wake you up in the morning, but can also stain and discolor your teeth.

The average American worker spends an estimated $1,100 on coffee -- this equals roughly 70 gallons of coffee a year. Quitting (or at least cutting back on) coffee drinking can do more than add to your pocket, however. Switching coffee for water or other clear beverages can help to prevent teeth staining.

Coffee’s naturally dark color can stain your teeth over time, causing them to take on a slightly brown tinge. If you have ever rinsed out a coffee cup and viewed a brown ring around the cup, you can imagine the same effect may occur on your teeth.

In addition to color playing a factor, coffee is a highly acidic drink. This means the acids present in coffee can eat away at your teeth enamel, making the portions underneath your dental enamel more vulnerable to damage and decay. Adding cream or milk to your coffee does not necessarily reduce coffee’s effects because the same ingredients and acids are present, even when milk is added.

At our Stony Point, NY dentist’s office, we understand that giving up coffee “cold turkey” may not be reasonable. If this is the case, try to consume coffee at specific times instead of drinking it over the course of the day. After you finish drinking your coffee, swish and rinse out your mouth with water or brush your teeth to remove potentially staining pigments.

The good news is that professional teeth whitening can be successful in reducing stains due to coffee consumption. If you would like to learn more about this service, call our Stony Point, NY dentist’s office.

While daily coffeeshop visits may be a “don’t,” making an appointment for a check-up every six months at our office is a “do.” Call (845) 429-8060 for more information.
