Cracked ToothFind out how to handle a cracked tooth and when to see your Rockland County dentist.

Whether in the heat of a game or biting into your lunch there are countless situations in which you may be faced with a cracked tooth. If so, this dental emergency will most likely require immediate treatment from your Rockland County dentist Dr. Michael Bleyzer. Find out how to handle a cracked tooth so you can save your smile from further complications.

Can you treat a cracked tooth at home?

The simple answer is no. You won’t be able to effectively treat a cracked tooth without seeing your Rockland County dentist for proper care. A cracked tooth is often considered a dental emergency so the sooner you seek treatment from us the better. Even if your tooth looks okay it doesn’t mean you should put off treatment.

A cracked tooth will often ache or hurt when exposed to extreme temperatures. You will be able to tell that you are dealing with a cracked tooth if it doesn’t hurt to bite down on the damaged tooth but it hurts upon releasing the bite. A tooth that hurts constantly may be a sign that you’ve damaged a nerve. Constant dental pain also warrants an immediate trip to your Rockland County dentist.

How will my Rockland County dentist treat my cracked tooth?

Not all cracks are created equally, which means we’ll need to handle them all differently. Smaller cracks only affect the surface of the tooth, or the enamel. While we may lightly polish it if the area is rough, treatment is rarely needed.

A cracked tooth affects the entirety of the tooth. If left untreated the crack will continue to grow. While some cracks can be fixed with a dental filling resin, most cracked teeth will require a dental crown. Those with damaged nerves or blood vessels may also need root canal therapy, too.

As the official dentist for the Rockland Boulder, our office has seen its fair share of dental emergencies. Don’t put off issues like a cracked tooth. Preserve your smile by seeing your Rockland County dentist today.
