Find out the best way to treat a chipped tooth.

Lunchtime gives you a much-needed break from work, and you looked forward to it all morning. But, unfortunately, your tooth had other plans! As you get ready to bite down, you hear an audible crack - and it wasn’t coming from your food. If you've chipped a tooth, find out Chipped Toothwhat to do and how your Rockland County dentist Dr. Michael Bleyzer will handle your dental emergency.

What could cause my tooth to chip?

Though tooth enamel is strong, it isn’t impervious to damage. With impact or injury, enamel can chip. Front teeth are at a particular disadvantage, as they are the most likely to be damaged since they are often improperly used as tools. If you’ve damaged a back tooth, this could be the result of eating hard foods like candy.

If your tooth also contains dental work (e.g. a filling), this can also weaken the tooth and increase its risk of being chipped or cracked.

When is it a good time to see my Rockland County dentist?

Whenever you chip a tooth it’s always a good idea to come see Dr. Bleyzer for medical care. Even if you think you can see the extent of the damage, there could be a crack running through your tooth that you don’t even know is causing issues. Plus, we’ll also run a series of X-rays to check the integrity of the tooth’s roots to make sure there is no damage.

What can I do for my tooth before I come in for treatment?

If you are dealing with a sharp or jagged tooth, place sugar-free gum over it to prevent injury - just don’t try to file down the tooth yourself! If you are experiencing pain, you can try over-the-counter pain relievers and anti-inflammatories to keep swelling and discomfort down.

If a large piece has been chipped off, your best bet it to keep the chipped piece under your tongue and immediately come into our office. In many cases we can bond the chipped part back on.

It’s important that if you experience any kind of dental problems that you come into our Rockland County dental office right away for treatment. We are here for all of your dental needs, whether they are emergencies or not!
