Which Type of Dentures are Right for You?

This is a great option for many patients who are missing dentures all or most of their teeth, as dentures provide a quick and simple replacement. Of course, our Pomona, NY, dentist, Dr. Michael Bleyzer, offers Stony Point and Rockland County area residents different kinds of dentures, depending on their specific needs.

Partial and Complete Dentures

The two main types of dentures are partial and complete. From the names alone most people are able to deduce when these dentures are most often used: complete dentures are used when you have no natural teeth left, while partial dentures are used when you still have some natural teeth remaining.

Dentures are a set of false teeth that sit on a plastic base that is created to look just like gum tissue. While dentures have certainly come a long way over the years and offer a more natural appearance and a better fit than they used to many decades ago, it’s important to understand that it will take time to adjust to your new teeth. While dentures can give you a full smile again, they will not function just like real teeth.

Immediate Dentures

If our dentist has to extract diseased or damaged teeth then you will have to wait until the gums have fully healed before getting your permanent dentures. Of course, we understand that you don’t want to wait several weeks without teeth, and in this situation, we will apply immediate dentures.

Just as the name suggests, these types of dentures are placed in right after an extraction. Although they won’t offer the same custom or exact fit as partial or complete dentures (which are made based off molds of your mouth), they will provide you with false teeth for the interim while your gums fully heal.

Implant-Supported Dentures

One complaint about dentures is that they can shift, move, or make noise when chewing or speaking. While denture adhesives can help, they aren’t a permanent or guaranteed fix. In this case, implants can be placed within the jawbone to support and hold your dentures in place.

Implant-supported dentures are ideal for adults dealing with tooth loss who are otherwise healthy and who want a durable and long-term tooth replacement option for supporting their false teeth.
