Types Of Dentures Available

Denture optionsDentures are a part of the restorative branch of dentistry, which means that they not only restore the look of natural teeth but the function of them as well. Dentures have been around a long time; there is a longstanding myth that George Washington wore wooden teeth. While our first President did wear dentures due to ongoing oral health issues, they were actually made from a combination of human and cow teeth and had a metal base consisting of lead, brass and steel. As you can imagine, these weren't very comfortable to wear, and Dr. Michael Bleyzer, your dentist in Rockland County, Stony Point and Pomona, NY, is happy to assure patients that his dentures are much easier to wear and far more attractive! You can learn more about the two main types of dentures Dr. Bleyzer offers here.

Complete dentures

These are the traditional restorations that most people think of when they hear the word "dentures." Also called full dentures, they can replace all of the teeth in both the upper and lower jaw. The base of complete dentures is typically made from a plastic composite called acrylic that is colored to match gum tissue. The artificial teeth that are attached to the base can be made from acrylic as well, but are often made out of ceramic. Dentures stay in place through the suction between the gum ridges and the base, although your Pomona dentist may recommend a certain type of adhesive to keep them stable. Dentures should be removed during sleep and for cleaning, which can be achieved through regular brushing and soaking in a cleaning solution. Prior to wearing your dentures, Dr. Bleyzer will take comprehensive measurements to ensure that they fit comfortably and look realistic.

Partial dentures

For people who still have some to most of their natural teeth, partial dentures from your Pomona dentist can fill in the spaces with realistic replacements. Partials, as they're often called, have the same acrylic base and ceramic teeth as complete dentures, but they rely on metal clasps that allow the wearer to attach them to the adjacent natural teeth. Partials are also a removable dental restoration and need to be cleaned in the same kind of solution as a full set.
