Six Month Checkups Keep Your Smile Healthy

Posted on 5/2/2018 by Michael Bleyzer, DDS
Woman receiving a six month checkupIt may not always seem convenient to care for your teeth and gums, but it's always beneficial when you consider the long-term effects. It extends the life of your teeth, prevents gum disease, and keeps your smile looking bright and healthy. Many cases of dental and gum disease are directly caused by poor dental hygiene and lack of regular dental visits. See why you should schedule six-month checkups with Dr. Michael Bleyzer serving Pomona, Rockland County and Stony Point, NY.

What the ADA Recommends

The American Dental Association has published guidelines for how to care for your teeth and gums for many years. The suggestions seem simple enough, but unfortunately, many people do not follow them as closely as they should. One recommendation is that you see your dentist every six months for a check-up and dental consultation, which may include a cleaning and X-rays. Higher risk patients should consult their dentist on how often they should come in for checkups.

Why Every Six Months?

A lot can happen to your smile in the course of a few months, which is why it's best to see your dentist every six months. It doesn't take long for the film around your teeth to turn into plaque and then harden into tartar or calculus. A person who has had a serious dental problem in the past should come to Dr. Bleyzer's Pomona, Rockland County and Stony Point family dentistry practice even more frequently—about every three months.

What Happens at Your Six Month Checkup?

If you’ve been taking good care of your teeth, brushing and flossing regularly, your six-month check-up will likely be easy and fast. Your dentist will thoroughly clean areas of concern and suggest possible treatments to improve your smile, like orthodontic or cosmetic solutions. If you're due for one, a dental X-ray will be taken so that your dentist can get a better view of your teeth and bone tissue.
