While there are some factors involved in your tooth color that can work against you - such as your heredity and medications you’ve taken as a child - others you can work to prevent by taking these steps.

Skip on Tooth-Staining Foods

While it may not be any big secret that your daily cup of joe is leading to stained teeth, it bears repeating that coffee, along with red wine, cola, blueberries, strawberries and raspberries, can all stain your teeth. One secret that can help when it comes to your caffeine habit is to drink these beverages through a straw. Doing so deposits their tooth-staining foods toward the back of your mouth, not the front, so staining will be less visible.

Munch on Crisp Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are not only packed with nutrients - the super-crisp ones can help to keep your teeth white. That’s because munching on foods such as apples, pears, celery or carrots, triggers your mouth to produce extra saliva. And saliva is great for washing away harmful bacteria as well as tooth-staining food debris. So the next time you consume tooth-staining foods and don’t have a toothbrush handy, pick up a healthy snack instead.

Sesame Seeds Are For Scrubbing

Sesame seeds are a great way to add protein and flavor into your diet. As an added bonus, they also can act as mini scrubbers for your teeth, helping to remove stain-causing plaque. Sesame seeds are commonly found on breads, and you can also add them to stir-fry dinners and veggies, such as broccoli (which also has tooth-whitening capabilities as well.

Watch Your Sugar Intake

The bad news is that bacteria have a sweet tooth. They are attracted to and feed off of sugars that live on your teeth. This not only leads to more cavities, it also leads to dental discolorations because your protective dental enamel can become eroded. To protect your teeth, limit your sugary foods intake. Because these foods - such as gummy bears - tend to be sticky, it’s important to brush your teeth whenever possible to minimize damage. Don’t neglect another sugary source - energy and sports drinks. These drinks can also lead to dental decay and staining. If you can’t brush your teeth right away, drinking water right afterwards can help to wash away sugary substances.
