Are Sealants Right for My Child?

Posted on 5/5/2018 by Michael Bleyzer, DDS
Young girl drinking waterAccording to recent statistics from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, dental decay in young children is on the rise. There is a way that you can protect your child's teeth. It is a treatment called dental sealants offered by Dr. Michael Bleyzer at his family dentist office in Pomona, NY, also serving Stony Point and Rockland County, NY.

What Are Dental Sealants?

When there is the potential for a hole or crack to form in something, the common sense fix is to seal it up for added protection. That is what your family dentist does when he applies sealants to your child’s teeth. Sealants are made of a special liquid plastic resin or glass ionomer material that can be directly applied to the surfaces of the teeth. The material gets hard and settles into the pits and fissures of each molar.

Are They Right for Your Child?

Dr. Bleyzer and his team in Pomona, also serving Stony Point and Rockland County, NY are passionate about helping parents and their children maintain healthy smiles with preventive treatments. Here are a few indications that your child may be a good candidate for dental sealants:
- The child's permanent teeth have come in.
- Your child has already been to the dentist on more than one occasion for cavity fillings.
- Your child really likes to eat sugary foods and treats frequently.
- The child has poor dental hygiene habits or has been very resistant to regular brushing and flossing.
- Ease Your Child's Mind

Many children are afraid of going to the dentist because they think there will be drills and other uncomfortable tools used. Let your child know that at a sealant appointment, all the dentist will use is a brush to apply the sealant material. A curing light (also harmless) will be applied to harden the material.
