Are You Maintaining Good Oral Hygiene?

Posted on 5/29/2018 by Michael Bleyzer, DDS
Caring for your smile doesn’t have to be difficult. Of course, many people’s oral hygiene can fall by the wayside without them ever noticing. While you might not like to admit that you aren’t providing your teeth and gums with the proper care they need, it’s important that you change your habits to improve your oral health. From the office of our Pomona, Rockland County, and Stony Point, NY, dentist, Dr. Michael Bleyzer, here are some helpful tips to support healthy teeth and gums.

Eat for Your Smile

What you eat can either promote healthy teeth and gums or increase your chances of decay or gum disease. It’s always a good rule of thumb to consume sugar in moderation, as diets high in sugar can lead to cavities. Choose from healthy, balanced foods that will provide your body with the nutrients it needs. Healthy diets should contain lean proteins, whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and low-fat dairy. Avoid sodas, fruit juices, and sports drinks, and make sure you are drinking enough water.

Checkups are Crucial

Visiting your Pomona, Rockland County, and Stony Point general dentist is a non-negotiable, no matter how healthy you are. Even if you’ve never had a cavity in your life you still need to visit a dentist twice a year for routine checkups. During these checkups, we will clean teeth and gums to remove plaque and tartar buildup (the biggest culprits for cavities and gum disease) while also checking for problems early on when they are easier to treat. Visiting us twice a year can prevent long-term complications from happening to you.

Make Sure Your At-Home Routine is Optimal

Take a second to consider the at-home oral tools you are using to maintain a healthy smile. How often do you brush and floss every day? How often do you change your toothbrush (or toothbrush head)? What kind of toothpaste do you use? The answers to these questions are the most important.

You should be brushing at least twice a day and flossing daily. When you brush you need to spend at least 2 minutes doing so (anything less and you risk missing spots). You should also be changing your toothbrush about every three to four months (or as soon as the bristles fray). Opt for a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste (fluoride is great for preventing cavities).
