Find out more about root canal treatment, and when your symptoms warrant a trip to our office.

Does my tooth pain mean I need a root canal?

There are many reasons why you might have tooth pain, but, unfortunately, the problem doesn’t typically go away on its own. If your dental pain is caused by severe decay or an infection that affects the tooth pulp, then a root canal will be recommended.

So, how do you know that your tooth pain is caused by decay or an infection? You won’t be able to tell just by looking at the tooth. In fact, the only way to get a proper diagnosis is by seeing your Stony Point dentist. We can run X-rays and examine your tooth to determine if your pain is being caused by any of these issues.

What is root canal therapy?

A root canal is the part of the tooth between the dental pulp and the roots of the tooth. A root canal contains nerves, which are there to sense extreme temperatures and pain. But when the dental pulp becomes irritated or inflamed, it often needs to be removed. By removing the nerve of the tooth, you can eliminate dental pain and prevent the infection or decay from spreading.

What are the signs that I may need a root canal?

While not all dental pain means that you will definitely need root canal treatment, here are some common signs of infection that will require a trip to our Stony Point dental office:
- Severe pain, particularly when chewing
- Serious sensitivity to extreme temperatures like hot or cold
- A pimple-like growth on the gums near the affected tooth
- Tenderness or swelling of the gums surrounding the tooth

Are you experiencing any of these symptoms? Then it’s time to see your Stony Point dentist Dr. Bleyzer right away. Dental problems don’t go away on their own, and often get worse if left untreated. Protect your oral health by scheduling that much-needed visit.
