Sensitive Teeth Sometimes Need Medication

Posted on 8/20/2019 by Michael Bleyzer, DDS
Sensitive Teeth Sometimes Need MedicationSensitive teeth can be a major source of discomfort. Many factors contribute to sensitivity, including receding gums, acid erosion, and a lack of fluoride. In some cases, a simple change to the diet can improve sensitivity, but in severe cases, you might need medication to feel better. These are some of the options.

Desensitizing Gels

Desensitizing gels like SenzAway can provide immediate relief to edible items that are hot, cold, or sweet. Once applied, the treatment can last for several months, and it can be placed on all the teeth in your mouth.

Pain Relief Liquids and Creams

Another option is the use of pain relief gels, creams, or liquids, which may help with sensitivity if one particular tooth is bothering you. It isn't the best option for widespread sensitivity, but it can also help to alleviate discomfort caused by toothaches, cold sores, and canker sores. However, you shouldn't use these substances for more than a week.

Sensitivity Relief Strips

Companies like Crest have developed tooth sensitivity relief strips to help you deal with the discomfort that comes with sensitivity. Simply apply the strip to the teeth and let it sit for ten minutes. You'll enjoy immediate protection and relief that can last for up to a month.

Treat the Root Cause of Sensitivity

While medication can help with the symptoms of tooth sensitivity, it is important to get to the bottom of the problem to prevent it entirely. A diet high in acid, such as drinking a lot of soda, can lead to sensitivity, and overly-aggressive brushing can also pose a problem. By identifying the cause, you can take steps to correct it and may not need medication long-term.
