Dental Crown

Rendering of jaw with dental crownDental crowns are caps that we place over a tooth that is damaged to restore its appearance and protect it from further decay. There are many reasons why a patient may need to get a new crown and here at Thiells Dentist - Michael Bleyzer, DDS, we provide the most comprehensive treatment options.

When Do You Need to Get Dental Crowns?

There are multiple reasons why you may need a dental crown including:
•  Decay. When a cavity filling is not enough to control and prevent further deterioration, you will need a crown to save that tooth.
•  Protecting a tooth with an old crown. If the tooth is severely decayed, we may need to replace an old crown.
•  Protecting a tooth that has been filled multiple times. A tooth that has had several cavities and has little of its natural structure left.
•  To hold a dental bridge
•  For cosmetic reasons. To cover imperfections such as tooth discoloration and uneven shape.
•  For dental implants. If you are missing teeth and get dental implants as replacements, you will need to get a dental crown.

What Materials Are Used to Make Dental Crowns?

When you need a dental crown, we will discuss which is the best material for you based on your desires, the tooth being treated, and what is covered by your insurance company. In general, there are several materials used to make dental crowns:
•  Resins are a popular choice because of the lower cost, but they are also one of the least durable materials.
•  Ceramic or porcelain. These materials are more durable and can be used for front or back teeth. Ceramic or porcelain also is ideal to match natural teeth color and for people who are allergic to metals.
•  Metals. Are one of the most durable materials used to build a crown, and they can withstand the great pressure used in chewing. Metals work very well in crowns for molars, and the materials used in this type of crowns include gold, platinum, and alloys. These crowns almost never chip, but the color is what most patients do not like.
•  Porcelain fused to metal. These crowns can be made to match the color of your teeth but are more prone to chips or cracks. They can also wear the opposing tooth more than metal crowns.

Steps to Get a Dental Crown

You will need two visits to get a dental crown. During the first visit, we take an impression of the tooth we are treating and send it to the lab that will build your new crown. At this time, we will also perform other treatments if needed, including a root canal. If there is decay, our dentist will remove it and fill the tooth. Sometimes you will go home with a temporary crown.

Once the crown is ready, you will come back, and our dentist will place and set the permanent crown with the material selected at the first appointment. You must care for the new crown just as you do the rest of your teeth.
